LSU Colors for the Win

The previous day’s trip in Fairhope, Alabama was very productive so I was curious if today would be just as good. The water was getting clearer but it was still on the muddy side so I decided on presenting the fish with LSU colored lures. It paid off in shades. I started with a Biobait and six fish in they destroyed the lurer so I switched to the more durable Z-Man Purple Death and Sexy Penny. I ended up with around 25 speckled trout, most around the 16-18” range with a couple getting close to the 20” mark.

The fish were in different areas than yesterday. I noticed fish slicks and birds at the end of piers so I spent most of my time about 30 yards away from the piers. I also followed birds. There was a steady southeast wind the entire afternoon. The water would have a chop. Whenever I saw smoother water I would make casts in and around the slick. The fish slicks are produced by feeding fish and the oil from the baitfish rises to the top of the water causing smooth patches on the surface of the water. This strategy paid off locating the speckled trout. Let the water tell you where the fish are.
