Sunset Fishing in Mobile Bay, Alabama

I put in around 3:00 pm for this trip at Fairhope, Alabama in Mobile Bay. It was after low tide and before the start of the incoming tide. There was a southwest wind and I had hopes the winds would push water back into the bay. The downside to a southwest wind is peddling the Hobie Pro Angler against the wind. Good news the peddle back would be easier provided the winds stay the same. An hour into the trip I was consigning myself to a skunk trip. I hooked a big fish but it came off. I was getting bites but they were not aggressive. I was using larger baits this trip as I wanted to catch a 25” plus speckled trout so the larger baits will exclude smaller fish naturally as they can’t inhale the lures.

The water was choppy but there were fish slicks popping up. I didn’t see much bait in the water but did see mullet jumping. Fishing the slicks produced around 8 speckled trout this evening. I was using a dark Biobait 5” jerk shad and 5” Slam Shady and both lures produced. I used the Slam Shady more and it is a my confidence lurer as I like working paddle tails over jerk baits. The bite turned on about an hour before sunset, with the window of catches between 4:30 and 5:30. All released.
