West Side Bayou Chico - Blessed Assurance

This evening’s fishing trip in Bayou Chico took place along the perimeter of the west end of Bayou Chico. It was an incoming tide and I launched about 30 minutes before the start of a minor peak. As usual the water was very clear and the lurer of choice was a 4” Slam Shady. I started among the piers on the south side and caught a few speckled trout. When the bite slowed I moved west and caught more speckled trout around the piers. Moving north I caught another speckled trout. From there I went east and fished around the island with no bites. By this time I had almost completed the full circle. I proceeded to catch 3 more speckled trout where I started, and had one bite that broke off the lurer. Looking at the pics, I had one catch that had the lurer a little deeper so there was some abrasion on the line. I need to remind myself to check for abrasions. All totaled, I caught 8 speckled trout and they were all released.

On a side note, kayak fishing is an activity that I lose track of time. My senses are geared to watching the water and listening for birds as I can usually identify birds in the area before I see them. If birds are fishing, that usually means speckled trout fish are feeding on the bait as well. For some reason the old Hymn “Blessed Assurance” kept popping into my head. Fishing recalibrates my headspace and spirit. It is a time of reflection and prayer and thinking about family and friends that may be going through tough times. “All is at rest.”
