Heron Bayou in Pensacola Florida

I chose Heron Bayou near Pensacola, Florida because there was a north wind. Heron Bayou is a north-south body of water off of Perdido Bay so I figured it would be protected from the wind and it would be getting water pushed into the bayou. The water was clear with a slight tea stain so I used white paddle tails. I was also on a major peak. This was the second time fishing the bayou so I don’t know it too well. I don’t have a depth finder so I decided on finding spots the old fashion way by trolling.

I was encouraged by the few osprey I was seeing and I hooked up on a fish while taking osprey pictures. It came off at the kayak so I repositioned and made a few more casts. I caught another specked trout and it also came off at the kayak. They were not biting aggressively. My guess is we had a slight cold spell and the fish were just a little sluggish. I proceeded north and trolled to the mouth of the bayou and no strikes. I also fished a canal off of the bayou and no bites. By this time I figured the area I first hooked specks would have calmed back down so I headed back south. A couple casts and I caught a nice trout. I moved a little farther south and hooked another fish and it also came off. So, I landed one fish and hooked up on three. It was disappointing not to land the fish but it is always great catching fish in unfamiliar waters and knowing my choice of location was confirmed.
