Pensacola Inshore Fishing - Bayou Chico

Bayou Chico is my go to spot after big weather events because the water usually stays clear and there are deep pockets of water all over the bayou. We had two days of rain and winds on the Gulf Coast and as usual the waters looked great. It was dark clear water so I used a white Biobait paddle tail that was barely hanging on from previous fishing trips. The first trout I caught took care of the remnants of the soft plastic and I switched to a 4” Slam Shady paddle tail. I proceeded to catch 5 more speckled trout and a Spanish mackerel. From the Mahogany Mill Boat Launch I proceeded east towards the mouth of the bayou fishing the ends of piers, sailboats, and any structure along the way. The biggest trout, which was close to 20”, and Spanish were caught at the mouth and at the channel drop off near the rock piles. This trip extended my streak of catching speckled trout in Bayou Chico to 16 months.

I launched around 11 am and I was at the tail end of a major peak. The winds were slightly out of the southwest and we had overcast skies. The current wasn’t moving too much and was virtually still by the time I got back to the boat launch around 2:30.
