Speckled Trout on the Eastern Shore

Today was a very windy day, with high gusts. Fortunately it was mostly an east wind so there was some protection in Fairhope, Alabama. The skies were mostly cloudy and I chose a 3” off-white paddle tail. I did a water test and the white showed up better than a purple and chartreuse plastic. All but one trout was caught on the white paddle tail. There was a lull in the action and it was also a time it was sunny. I noticed the white color wasn’t as contrasty in the water so switched to LSU colors. I caught one trout and had multiple bites. However, overcast skies returned and I switched back to white. The area around the American Legion produced again. I lost count of the trout I caught, was at least twenty. The size was the same as three days ago, most in the 16-18” range with one measuring close to 20”. They were in open water and close to structure. Fish slicks would pop up and I would usually catch one or two at each slick. The retrieve was pretty much steady and I had a few trout chasing right up to the kayak. I launched at the tail end of a major peak, around 8:30 am. The wind kept the current moving and it was a steady bite until 12:30.
